We love hummingbirds and love to Watch them throughout the day, especially after a long day, relaxing in our backyard nature retreat.

We have 4 feeders that are strategically located throughout our gardens. The red, hummingbird nectar feeders (red attracts hummingbirds) are placed in areas that are naturally defined "territories" (as you know, hummingbirds are very territorial) which helps cut down on the fighting.

Our recipe is derived from the old standard recipe, but please be aware that a lot of research has gone into making sure that we are providing the most beneficial source of hummingbird Food replaceMent.

Our recipe starts with cane sugar. As you know, there are two sources ofsugar: cane sugar and beet sugar, of which 70% of the world's Supply comes from cane sugar. Both are chemically "sucrose" and fall into the carbohydrate family. Carbohydrates are easily digested and provide the immediate "energy boost" that hummingbirds need to
sustain their incredibly high metabolism. (ComMent: I guess if we humans had that kind of metabolism we wouldn't be facing our obesity crisis! Wow ... what a concept ... more exercise
... increased metabolic rate ... burn more calories ... less fat).

Sorry! Back to the topic ... the second constituent our hummingbird Food recipe is water. Ever thought about the type of water you use for your hummingbird Food? We have. The hummingbird's source water comes from the naturally occurring water sourcesavailable: dew, rain water and deposits of rain water, people provided (bird baths), and finally that provided in the hummingbird's diet.

We use our tap water which is supplied from our well. The water's chemical composition is generally hard (contains calcium and magnesium) but has a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)
of 275 ppm with no measurable concentrations of lead or arsenic. Its safe for us to drink so the hummers get the benefits of some added minerals. We feel its better than using
distilled or purified water in our hummingbird recipe.

Now, if you're a city dweller, you may have chlorine or flouride added to your water. I'd recommend that boiling water to flash off the chlorine or flouride, 5 minutes of
boiling should besufficient.

Next ingredient ....RED COLORING.No way!

Lets look at it from a hummingbird's perspective. They like red and are attracted to the color due to genetics and environmental stimulations ... flowers. If your hummingbird feeder is
red ... why do you need more?

Naturally occurring nectar is clear and odorless (Hummingbirds are not attracted by scent). So why buy these colored or scented mixes?

The red coloring (Red # 40) has been banned in countries due to its muTAGenic properties (can cause cancer). Why would you want to introduce chemicals into the hummingbird's diet that are foreign to their digestive system?

Several experienced, licensed wildlife rehabilitators have reported seeing disturbing damage in hummers thatwere known to use dyed syrup, including tumors of the bill and liver.

Here is our researched hummingbird food recipe:

1 part cane sugar/4 parts water (no chlorine or fluoride)
Measure and add sugar, at the rate of 1/4 cup of sugar to 1 cup of water. Let cool and store in refrigerator until excess
ready to use.

Fill one-third of the container and be sure to change the mixture twice a week. You will need to clean your feeder every few days, with hot water and a mild bleach solution (10%)
to inhibit bacteria/mold. Rinse thoroughly before refilling with water syrup.

Birds can definitely use our hospitality - songbird populations are shrinking due to the loss of their natural habitat. Ever expanding urban developMent, use of pesticides and insecticides on farms and in our yards, roaming Cats and even collisions with the glass windows of our buildings all contribute to their diminished numbers.

Picture instead a garden created as a bird-friendly habitat. Plants to provide shelter, Food and nesting materials abound. Diverse plantings attract many species of birds, as well as the insects they feed on. Brush piles and trees provide shelter, nesting areas, and food. Whenever possible, encourage native plants, as their seeds are the natural food for native birds.

Sunflowers, goldenrod, coneflower and joe-pye weed are great plants to include in a bird-friendly garden. As these go to seed, finches, juncos, sparrows and goldfinches will be attracted. Hummingbirds are attracted to bold colorful plants, especially red ones. They prefer bell or trumpet-shaped flowers, such as bleeding heart, flag iris, bluebells, and wild geraniums in spring. Beebalm, butterfly weed, monarda, and verbena are summer favorites for the little hummers.

By keeping evergreens in your yard, you'll provide birds with shelter both winter and summer. Pine cones provide food for species such as crossbills, chickadees, finches and towhees. Hang a few birdhouses in your trees or on fence posts to encourage nesting. Berry-producing trees such as mountain ash, Russian olive and crabapple are popular with birds, and are good food sources in fall and winter. Some of the best shrubs for attracting birds include Canada serviceberry, partridgeberry, common elderberry, common Snowberry and the highbush blueberry. Robins love to eat rose hips, the fruit of rugosa roses.

Set up a feeding station to provide birds with food when natural and garden food is scarce and insects are few. Make sure your feeder is squirrel-proof and easily cleaned and filled. Why not hang several feeders, each with different seeds to attract a variety of birds? Black sunflower seeds are favorites of cardinals, bluejays, finches and sparrows. Niger seeds atract songbirds and finches. And since the birds will come to rely on this food source, fill the feeders through the winter.

Hang a hummingbird feeder near your outdoor space, and enjoy these little birds as they hover to feed. A hummingbird feeder will need cleaning every two or three days in warm weather, and the syrup is easily made. Simply clean feeders by scrubbing with hot water, and allowing to Air dry thoroughly. Commercial cleaners may be toxic to birds.

Birds need fresh water so a birdbath in the garden is a good addition. It should be shallow, with sloping sides. The surfaces should be rough, and add a few rocks for perches. Scrub the birdbath and refill the water often, to keep the water fresh and minimize mosquito populations. Locate your birdbath in a sunny spot, away from trees or dense shrubs. Bathing birds are easy prey for lurking Cats!

It's not difficult to design a bird-friendly garden. A natural-looking space is more attractive to birds than a well-manicured yard. Soon you'll have a friendly place to sit back, relax, and just do a little bird Watching!

If the world's smallest and largest birds were to sit next to each other, the effect might be that of a city bus parked next to a tricycle. Birds have evolved to fill every ecological niche on the planet, and have developed body sizes and other adaptations to help them survive. Some birds prefer to be small and light, to maneuver and hide in vegetation. Others are large, heavy, and strong, designed for long-distance flight.

The record holders for world's smallest birds are truly a petite bunch. Coming in at an infinitely small 1.5 grams and 5 centiMeters, the Bee hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) is the world's smallest bird overall. Although this bird is small, its appearance belies a fiery personality. The males, which are smaller than the females, are iridescent red, blue, green, and white. The species is endemic to Cuba.

A tie exists between contenders for the title of world's smallest raptor. The Southeast-Asian Black-legged Falconet (Microhierax fringlius) and Borneo's White-fronted Falconet (Microhierax latifrons) average 5.5 inches in length and 1.25 ounces. Very small mice, beware! Not much is known about the world's smallest parrots, members of Papua New Guinea's genus Micropsitta. Species within this genus, including the Yellow-capped, Buff-faced, Finsch's, Geelvink, Meek's, and Red-breasted Pygmy Parrot, are all approximately 8 centiMeters long.

The award for the world's smallest average egg size goes to the egg of the Vervain Hummingbird (Mellisuga minima) of Jamaica. The eggs, less than 1 centimeter in length, are not much larger than a pea.

On the opposite end of the spectrum are the world's largest birds. The winner of the overall category is the imposing ostrich (Struthio camelus), which is endemic to Africa and stands at 2.7 meters (9 feet) tall and weighs 156 kg (345 lbs.). Built for speed, the ostrich is also the world's Fastest running bird, clocked at 45 miles per hour, and lays the world's largest eggs, at 2.3 kg.

The largest birds of prey are so outsized, it's a wonder they don't require a landing strip! The world's largest raptor is the Eurasian Black Vulture, which possesses a wingspan of more than 9 feet (3 m) and weighs 30 lbs. (14 kg). The extinct Haast's Eagle (Harpagornis moorei) was even larger, coming in at 15 lbs. and with a wingspan of 10 feet.

The fossil record proves that some extinct birds were so large that they dwarf even the heftiest of today's living birds. The largest bird in the fossil record is elephant bird of Madagascar, which grew to heights of 10 feet (3 m) and weighed an incredible 1,120 lbs. (500 kg). These birds went extinct approximately 300 years ago. Similarly outsized was Australia's Dromornis stirtoni. The tallest bird that ever lived was the Giant Moa (Dinornis maximus), endemic to New Zealand, that went extinct 200 years ago due to overhunting. This mammoth bird stood up to 12 feet (3.7 m) tall. The largest bird capable of flight was condor-like Argentavis magnificens, which possessed a wingspan of 28 feet (8.3 m) and weighed over 175 lbs. (80 kg).

3 of our 6 feeders at dusk keeping our hundreds of hungry hummers fed. Check out a truly lovable/remarkable cat, Cokie at 1:16. (If we could clone her personality, we'd be the richest people on Earth). She loves to watch (she's a lover), but isn't much of a birder. Note the deck is ~35' above the ground where's she's poking her nose out - as a kitten she'd sprint along the top rail giving us heart attacks watching her. One of our other cats, Muffet, can catch hummers out of mid air, so she isn't allowed on the deck any more (bad girl!). Since I go thru about ~700 lbs of sugar a year, I feed the hummers 2:1 sugar water mixture to keep me from continually cleaning and refilling. I still end up refilling all the feeders daily, even more during long summer days. FWIW, there is a lot of supposed "conventional wisdom" that says only to use 4:1 ratio, but it makes no sense. Hummers only want calories when they drink nectar. So the more concentrated the nectar, the fewer trips to the feeder are needed, allowing more time to hunt for food (insects) etc or flit around playing (yes, they do play). 4:1 is designed to get maximum trips for people's viewing pleasure, and nothing to to with the hummer's best interests. Needless to say, even though I work at home, feeding these hummers is a challenge. To help cut down the number of feeders to clean (and refill), I modified the 32 oz Perky Pet feeders by drilling more feeding ports to allow 12 (or more) to feed at a time rather than ...

What is a Good Bet? What is a Bad Bet?

I was out on the golf course recently with a friend of mine when I spotted a Gila Woodpecker up in a tree (yes, my golf ball is usually around the trees). I said to my friend, "Hey look there's a Gila Woodpecker". My friend being contrary as usual said, "No it's not! You don't know anything about birds". Well a conversation ensued and ultimately a wager was made. With my handy camera phone (I love today's technology) I took a picture of the feathered critter in question.

When we got home I broke out the bird book (we keep a bird book and reptile book on our back porch because we have lots of visitors to our backyard, and I don't mean the human kind). Anyway, we compared the picture I took on the golf course with the one in the book and it was in fact a Gila Woodpecker.

I won the bet, but the bigger question is was it a good bet?

Now, my friend was right, I don't know much about birds. However, there is a Gila Woodpecker that frequents my backyard (he likes the hummingbird feeder), so I was familiar with that particular bird.

When I saw that woodpecker in the tree I recognized it, because I had seen one like it on more than one occasion and had identified it in my bird book. Therefore, I contend that I made a good bet, based on personal knowledge.

The next question is did my friend make a good bet? Well, I contend he did as well, because he knew I wasn't a bird expert and while I don't know how many species of birds there are, in this bet, he had every other bird in the world (or at least every bird in our region of the country). In other words, let's say, for sake of conversation there are a thousand species of birds in our region. He had the other nine hundred and ninety-nine, I only had one. So, in an even money wager, the odds were actually in his favor.

What does all this mean to you? Well, I have read some interesting articles, blogs and forum discussions of late saying this bet and that bet are not good bets, with little or no substantiation, so I am going to break down two of those bets for you and let you figure out whether they are good bets or bad bets.

According to most experts it is generally acknowledged that the "field bet" in craps is a bad bet, and the "place bet" in the same game is a good bet. Let's take a look at both.

The field bet is a one roll bet, the very next roll of the dice. If it comes up 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12 you win. If you hit the 2 it pays 2 to 1, if you hit the 12 it pays 3 to 1, all others pay even money or 1 to 1. If it comes up 5, 6, 7, or 8 you lose. (In some casinos the payouts could be different, ALWAYS check the local house rules!)

There are 16 ways to win and 20 ways to lose, so the odds say you will win this bet 44% of the time. You will win 16 times out of 36 rolls. That is over the course of time, and as you well know anything can happen in a short run.

The house percenTAGe on this bet is 2.8%. If you make the same bet every time, you will lose .80 out of every 0.00 placed into action.

This is calculated by taking the amount of winnings and subtracting the amount of losses then dividing the total amount bet into the total amount lost. If that is confusing, here it is broken down. Assuming .00 bet each time.

In the 16 wins you will win , each on 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 (14 ways to make those numbers); on the 2 (one way to make the 2); and on the 12 (one way to make the 12) for a grand total of . In the 20 losses you will lose (.00 each). Your net loss is .00 ( - = .00 lost); if you divide this by the total amount bet (.00) you will get.02777 or 2.8%

Now let's examine the place bet. The place bet is selecting one of the "point numbers" (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) and betting it will be rolled before a 7 is rolled. For this illustration we will use the number 5.

So you are betting the 5 will appear before the 7, no other numbers matter. This bet pays you 7 to 5, so every time you win you will collect , while if you lose you will lose .

There are four ways to make a 5 and six ways to make a 7, so the odds of you winning this bet are 4 out of 10 or 40% of the time.

The house percenTAGe on this wager is 4%. Breaking that down assuming a bet each time.

Use a vinegar and hot water solution to clean all parts of the feeder. Rinse the feeder well with clear warm water then let dry before replacing the nectar. Change the nectar when you start to see it become cloudy. Some experts recomMend changing the nectar every 3 - 7 days. To keep ants, bees, wasps, and other insects from the feeder use a little mineral oil on the wire to the feeder and on the ports of the feeder. A word of caution when using the type of feeders that goes on windows! There have been occasions when hummingbirds have flown into windows that had a dark film on them. If you do decide to hang your feeder outside a window make sure that is has no tint to it.
Each type of feeder has some really good aspects. Only you can choose the feeder that is right for you and your décor. Don't be afraid of having to keep them clean and safe for the hummingbirds. The joy of having these beautiful birds in your yard or garden far out weighs the Job of maintaining the feeders. Get the feeder that is right for you and enjoy!
